New perspective on servers

As a PDF 'services' person who recently parachuted down into the dungeons of server software, I can report by now that there are different monsters down here. In fact, it's an entirely new level!

A few of the thoughts that come bubbling to the surface:

There's nothing new under the sun; computers and programming haven't really changed very much in 40 years.
Server software is as besotted by fads (.NET, XML, threading, etc, etc) as the fashion industry, and to precisely the same purpose.
Vital decisions about mission-critical technology are routinely turned over to line developers who aren't trained or equipped to deliver well-considered outcomes for the enterprise as a whole.
80% of server software purchased is never implemented.

More observations as the red pill continues to take effect...
