General question on PDFs, search engines and statistics

Hello,

I don’t know to whom my question should be directed, so I hope this email will be forwarded to the right PDF experts.

I'm looking around online for statistics on what kinds of .pdf files are being downloaded via search engines. I'm currently looking around for some sites on online that can give general information about this that aren't related to website SEO. I’ve come across Google Trends that is far too general, and Yahoo! Buzz/alexa.com and other such sites, are focused mainly on website trends and linking popularity. Thus, so far I have been unlucky.

One source I’ve contacted from a search engine stats network, says she hasn’t seen research on that kind of topic. Is it true that such statistics on what kinds of PDFs are being downloaded don’t exist? Is it even possible?

Any information or direction in the matter is greatly appreciated.

Thank You.

Regards,
Reena

Reena,

I'm not sure what you mean by "kinds of PDF".  What "kinds" are you thinking of?

To answer your question, I also am unaware of PDF-specific search-engine statistics.

If you can be more specific about what it is that you are looking for, that would help.

Re: General question on PDFs, search engines and statistics

Hi,

Thanks for you response. My apologies for being vague. I'll try and restate the question:

Are there statistics on what people are downloading in the PDF format via search engines? For instance, are there statistics that can tell me how many PDF forms are being downloaded online using a certain search engine, or how many PDF brochure links were clicked on, or how many PDF manuals were opened and accessed, etc.?

In hopes of further clarifying:
It's possible to track how many times and how many click throughs a website gets, or track down the most popular keywords being typed into a search engine which you can use to help optimize your own website ranks. Is there some way you can track what popular PDFs are being downloaded?

Can search engines distinguish between the PDF files being downloaded just by its contents?

Hope this helps!

Thanks in advance.
