Printing an umlaut

I want to get an umlaut printed.  I'm on a Linux system, and I have an umlaut character in my .ps file, that I am attempting to send to a postscript printer, but it prints an Amacron instead, followed by a small hollow square box.  Pleae help.

Re: Printing an umlaut

This is hardly an Acrobat or PDF question ... :-)

You give us very precious little to go on with regards to you problem including who or what generated the PostScript file, what font is being accessed and/or whether said font was included in the PostScript stream or resident in the printer. The umlaut character is not an ASCII character and as such may be problematic from the point of view of your communications channel. The fact that you are getting two characters printing out is indicative of some filter trying to convert this umlaut to a Unicode character, perhaps using UTF-8. Other considerations here would include the possibility that the font you are accessing is not encoded with the same encoding as your input stream. Without a sample of your PostScript file to examine and further information as to printer, communications channel, font, etc., it is virtually impossible for us to assist your further. You also might consider posting this on a PostScript printing forum somewhere as opposed to a PDF Printing and Prepress forum.
