When I attempt to open a PDF file, Microsoft PowerPoint comes up instead and I can't open the PDF.

You need to check your file associations in Control Panel > Folder options and make sure that open for files with the .pdf extension is set to either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat, depending on what you have installed on your system.
Check that first....

I really appreciate the response, but I need more detailed instruction! I went to my Control Panel and into the Folder options folder, but am "lost" from there! Could you walk me through? Thank you so much!
