I need to understand how pdf packages and or file cabinets work. if i combine 3 existing files - pdf, excel and word file into one package. am I creating copies of the pre-existing excel and word files or am I linking the originals to the pdf?

You are creating a new package with the files contained within the package (like copying them). There are no links to external files. You can copy the package to a CD ROM or email it and the files are accessible by other users.
