Pros & cons: Taking Acrobat education & training online

First, a quick reminder that we’re just a couple weeks out from the Adobe Acrobat & PDF Conference 2007, set for May 9-10 in Orlando. It features a wide range of topics led by expert users, vendor reps, consultants and select Adobe staff. At the AcrobatUsers.com booth, you’ll have a chance to mingle—and to try to stump—a number of our “Ask an Expert” team members, including Leonard Rosenthol, Lori DeFurio, Thom Parker

Doug Hanna, Joel Geraci and Duff Johnson. If you’re going to the conference, track down our experts between 10-3 – and check out some of the sessions in which they’re involved.

A couple weeks ago, we had a chance to observe and take part in another educational event—Carl Young’s PDF Conference, founded in 2000—that this year opted to eliminate the cost and hassles of travel. Adopting an online-only format, Young brought the event to attendees, who were linked to presenters via an Acrobat Connect meeting room. Having attended most of the previous PDF Conferences conducted in the traditional live, in-person format, the March 20-21 event offered an interesting comparison and a chance to test drive the latest Web conferencing solution. Afterward, we solicited impressions from both attendees and presenters. Both groups offered some good suggestions, summarized in an article listed below.

Best Regards
~ Kurt, Editor, AcrobatUsers.com

Online-only PDF Conference connects with attendees
Normally it wouldn't be good news if you planned an industry conference and nobody came. But that was the plan for the first online-only incarnation of the PDF Conference, hosted by Carl Young. Presenters and attendees discuss their experiences at the recently held event, conducted exclusively in an Acrobat Connect meeting room.

Meeting online using Acrobat Connect
Donna Baker explains how to add Acrobat Connect to your arsenal of commenting and reviewing tools for easy, real-time Web conferencing.

Navigating the functionality in Acrobat 8's navigation pane
The navigation pane in Acrobat 8 is intentionally less visible by default, but there's a lot of easy-to-access power just below the surface of each icon-based button.

Entering scripts into a Link Action
Thom Parker of WindJack Solutions explains how (and why) to attach JavaScript code when creating or modifying a link in Acrobat.

MyMac.com podcast interview: Ted Padova
A recent edition of the weekly podcast from MyMac.com includes an interview with Ted Padova, author of the "Adobe Acrobat 8 PDF Bible" and a blogger on AcrobatUsers.com. The Q&A covers a range of topics about the book and CD-ROM, and about learning how to effectively use the tools and features in the latest version of Acrobat 8.0 Professional. We’ve made the 16-minute audio excerpt available with permission.

Creating a form automatically
Donna Baker explains and illustrates why one of the coolest new features in Acrobat 8 Professional is the ability to create a form from a document using artificial intelligence to recognize fields automatically
