Where to find .u3d test/sample files?

Anyone know where to find sophisticated multi-view .u3d files,
for testing? Adobe have any? There's a nice one on page 6 of

http://www.adobe.com/manufacturing/pdfs/U3DWhitePaper.pdf

copyright Adobe Systems. Can Adobe make the .u3d for that available,
or similar .u3d files?

My company is working on adapting the .u3d parser to enable
automated import of U3D files into Adobe FrameMaker (then to
PDF). But we cannot find any test and illustration files, apart
from some VERY trivial downloadable .u3d examples. (We don't
have, or know how to use, AutoCad, Catia, etc, so can't make
'em.)

Any ideas or help would be wonderfully appreciated.

Best,

Rick

Here is what Doug Halliday mentions in his post regarding the 3D files, "Yes the 3D Tool Kit has been replaced by a different tool: 3D Reviewer. 3D Reviewer brings several new features such as comparison, physical properties, precise measurement, BOM export, Baloons and many other functions. The website is undergong some change and we hope to have the information you are looking for available very soon. If you are really stuck, contact me and I will try to help: dhallida [at] adobe [dot] com. I am trying to get you a specific date and URL for the updated content" in the post at What Happened to Acrobat 3D toolkit??There are also some 3D samples in the Acrobat 3D corner.

Dear Rick,

how have you solved the problem of extracting u3d/prc files from pdf?

I have used pdftk to decompress pdf and a text/binary editor to cut the contents of U3D streams into separate files.

It does not work if the file is protected like the one you reference, but some files at http://www.acrobatusers.com/tech_corners/3d/3d_gallery/ and http://www.pdf3d.co.uk/gallery.php are not.

Sincerely, Michail

Michail,

Thanks very much for the great suggestion. It's clever, and nice
and will surely come in helpful one day.

But I was simply hoping to find a .u3d file, i.e. prior to it's being
embedded in PDF, naively(?) thinking that Adobe might have a
shelf-load of 'em and someone from their 3D marketing team would
come back and say "No problem, try this!". (Just now the A3D arena
has the air of a hurriedly abandoned campsite, so maybe all Adobe
effort has been switched elsewhere?)

Thanks again.

Best,

Rick

Rick,

Shoot me an email at dhallida [at] adobe [dot] com and I will get you some U3D files. I don't have any sitting around, but using Acrobat Pro Extended/3D Reviewer, I can export some for you. You asked about exporting PRC as well, but we have no plans to support export of PRC. The export is very straight forward. Thanks,
Doug

Hi Doug

I would like to create a .pdf file from profile lines of the human head, I see that I could
produce a IDTF format file which could be used to produce a U3D file and this would then be
embeded into a .pdf.

Can you point me in the right direction to achive this, thanks in advance.

As to the right direction - it depends on where the profile data comes from (what format it is now in or can be converted to by your tools) and your programming skills/needs.
Are you looking for a standalone converter or want to add 3D PDF export to a program you write?

Hi mvid

My files are from laser line triangulation scanning which produce profile lines depicting
the surface of the human head, they could be described as points cloud as well.

With MeshLab I can import as points cloud but have not yet been able to export any good
data to .U3D, I am looking at Latex to use the .U3D file format then produce a .pdf.

I would like to write a .U3D file directly via C++ Code::Blocks then produce a .pdf

I want to know what it take to get my data sets ( clients scan data ) available for the
client to view in their web browser ?.
