JAWS Skipping the Table Headers

Does anyone have an answer why the column and row header is not spoken before reading the value in the data cells?

I have identified table headers, column and row. Under Attributes I have named ‘ID’ for the column and row headings.

The data cells have the ‘Associated Header Cell Ids’ added to the cells.

JAWS is not reading the column table headers when reading the data cells. It is only reading the row heading cell once (as it reads the row left to right).

Using:
JAWS Version 11.0.1471
Abobe Acrobat 9.0.0
Microsoft XP

I have more info on what I’m seeing/hearing. (I’m new to Acrobat but have been reading documentation on tables and screen readers.)

When JAWS reads through a simple table from the top, the column header is not read for each data cell. The row header is read once (as it reads the row left to right). However, when stepping through the simple table one cell at a time (CTRL + ALT+-->) the column header is read! However, I found when using/testing different Keyboard shortcuts the reading of the column header changes to “Column 2” “Column 3” instead of “Quarter 1” “Quarter 2” (when using CTRL + ALT+-->).With a complex table, only the highest level header is read. I have been trying different combinations with the Table Cell Properties and Associated Header Cell Ids and have not any success with the second level column header (“Quarter” headers). Again I’m finding inconsistency as I use different Keyboard shortcuts with how Jaws is working with the complex table.

With the CTRL + Down arrow, had no problem reading the data cells but headers were not announced.

Below are the tables I’m testing with.

Doug,

Could you post a 'share' link, via acrobat.com, to a PDF example that is a direct export from the authoring application and a link to a PDF in which you've the edits to the <Table> element?

I think it was 'you' who posted a related question over at the Acrobat Windows Forum.
That post alluded to working the "order" and it appears you gave yourself what Duff Johnson refers to as a "z-order" issue (you got content parked behind other content basically).
You want to work the structure tree via the Tags panel.
Here at the AUC, in the Learning Center's On Demand eSeminars there is a recording of Duff Johnson's eSeminar on Tagged for repurposing - the seminar provides a discussion of how to approach "working" a Tagged PDF.

Dave,

I have uploaded the table example into acrobat.com. To share the workspace I need to enter a valid email address to share the workspace. Your used name was not sufficient. How can I add you?
