Viewing PDF Documents in a Web Browser

Everytime I try to open a PDF document in a web browser, I get a
message on the computer screen stating "The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF Files in a web browser. Adobe Acrobat/Reader Version 8 or 9 is required. Please try again.".

I am running Windows Vista as my operating system and have Adobe 8.2
installed as my PDF reader. I also have Adobe Acrobat 9.4 Professional
installed on the same computer. Neither of these programs link to the web browserthat will allow me to open the PDF Files on the computer.

What settings do I have set incorrectly that disallows me to open these files or for reader to operate correctly?

Your assistance will be much appreciated.

Thank you.

I can no longer view or download my bills from my bank's bill pay system.

I am running XP pro and IE 7.

The bank said it was Adobe's problem. I uninstalled all Adobe software. I reinstalled Adobe Reader X. I have tried both opening as PDF and saving to desktop. Pursuant to the post above, I ran repair Adobe Reader.

The ATT bill has a "Download PDF" button but it just opens a new window and is blank. There is no red X it is just an empty window with a "print" button. I printed and page is blank except for the print button.

The Dish Network bill has a "Save as PDF" button, which lets you chose to open the PDF or saving the file. Whether I open it or save the file then open it, I get the same error. The error is "Adobe could not open [name of bill.PDF] because it is either not a supported file type or becuase the file has been damanged (for example ...).

The Laclede gas bill gives the option of 'viewing bill', which works fine and is presumably a file served up by the gas company. However, if you click "Save As PDF", you get the error message "We experienced unexpected results while downloading your bill. Please check file for accuracy. You may need to go to your billers website to view your bill."

First how do you fix the problem.

Second, it is US Bank and ATT and Dishnetwork. These are not small time players. Why is there a problem? The reason for the existence of the PDF format and Adobe is to avoid all this happy horses***.

I would suggest trying the websites using a non-Microsoft browser (Firefox, Opera or Chrome). There are issues with dynamically-served PDF files and Internet Explorer being reported by several users, which are being investigated.

After the last post, I did try it using Firefox. I had already tried it with an IPad.

Dish bill
Firefox, after clicking the "Save as PDF" button, gave the "Open with" option. Even weirder, the listed programs did not include Adobe Reader. I browsered over, found Adobe Reader X program and same old error message. I tried opening with Firefox and the new tab popped open and said "ERROR: Image ID not found in Image ID cache".

I have checked the properties on the downloaded file. It is 2.64KB in size. Under properties in the PDF tab, in the PDF producer section it says "Windows fast view, no" and PDF version 0.0.

More fun, the ATT "download PDF" did open (a new window not a tab, even though its Firefox) and it looked fine. However, when I clicked the save button on the PDF toolbar across the top of the window, it opened the save file dialog box but, after naming the file, when I clicked "Save" it locked up the window. I can't even close the window with ctrl-W and had to close down Firefox with Windows Task Manger.

There has been a technical note posted on this problem; however you should be aware that it involves modifying the registry. The technical note is PDF files not displaying for some sites while using Internet Explorer.
