Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 Extended Transparent Layers

I am a ArcGis user and have just installed Pro 9 Extended.

I am trying to bring into Acrobat the various layers of a map built in ArcMap so I can expand the population of the people I can reach with my work.

ESRI, the developer of ArcGis requires a costly extension to prepare a map for distribution to their free reader. The Acrobat Pro 9 Extended release appears to be able to accomplish this function at a lesser cost to a larger and established audience.

My problem is that I can not get a GIS layer into Acrobat that is transparent when superimposed on top of the georeferenced base PDF.

Do you mean you're bringing in the layer as a shapefile, and want to set the style of the lines and fills? If so, you can do that during the import process - the "import as layer" dialog box has a settings button just below the field where you pick the file - but only then. Once the layer is added, the style is fixed.

The SETTINGS buttom is not active before or after I have made a Source File: entry via Browse. There is no Style options on my "Import as Layer" panel.

Acrobat will not accept the ESRI lyr. extention. I have tried the suggested process after converting the layer to a .gif and a .jpg with no success.

The settings button only activates when you import an ESRI shapefile (You point Acrobat at the .SHP file and it brings in the support database file automatically). Only shapefiles can be registered as a second layer on an existing map.

There's a video example in the Learning Center - http://www.acrobatusers.com/tutorials/how-build-geospatial-pdf-acrobat-pro-extended

I have reviewed the video and have followed the example that is given. I have tried with multiple shapefiles that fit on the base map, which is parcel data, and get the following notice: "Nameoffile.shp could not be converted to PDF. Please select another source file." It should be noted that the projection and datum of the shapefile is not the same as the now converted base map. If this is a problem, how should I proceed? Must the Acrobat georeferenced map be only WGS 1984? Is there a book or manual that gives specific instructions for the execution of these new features?

Most all ArcGis shapefiles that I have worked with over the past 10 years have be based on a UTM projection in StatePlane, NAD27 or NAD83. Long/Lat is less accurate and can have serious distortions. All the shapefiles that I attempted to import into Acrobat were in one of these Datums and further defined by a Zone specification. Is Acrobat currently able to make the on the fly conversion from a decimal UTM projection to a Long/Lat degree, min, sec projection? Could this be the reason that some of your attempted imports didn't work? Are there restrictions? If so, what are they? Most of my shapefiles are in NAD27 of NAD83 Zone 18. The georeferenced PDF that I was importing to was in Long/Lat degrees.
