Adding item numbers

Hi, I am new to this forum and Acrobat. I am trying to figure out an "easy" way to add item numbers to an existing PDF (not created by me). The files are of design prints created by a CAD program and I have been tasked with doing a formal inspection report (FAI). What I want to be able to add are circled numbers (1 - up to 200). Right now I am manually pasting individual numbers from a "master" NUMBERS file, I am not sure how this file/ numbers were created but it looks like each number is a textbox and the number and circle are separate entities. This is very time consuming and sometimes when pasting the numbers from the "Master File" they are rotated and the only way I have found to correct this is to print the "print" file and scan it to a new PDF file; There has to be an easier/ better way to perform this task.
Can anybody recommend a good book that I can get to teach myself how to use the features Acrobat has to offer (I have 6.0 Pro and 8.0 Pro available to me at work).
Thanks in advance for your help.

Since you need to place these numbers depending upon the location of the items on the page, you may need to create a form or comment text box for the literal number and then add a circular comment around the number. To get the circles to print, one will need to print the document and comments.
