highlight tool not working on a scanned document

I am using a nex RICOH 5000 printer to scan documents that are e-mailed as a pdf file. I open the file with Acrobat 6. I can add notes to the document.

I can open the commenting tool bar and click on any of the three choices and make the pointer icon turn to that tool. I can place that tool icon on the words to be highlighted and drag it accross the word. It does not darken the words or change to yellow when I drag and release.

Is there something that I change in Acrobat 6 that will allow me do perform highlighing, etc.

The problem may be in the pdf settings in the printer?

Thanks in advance for input to my problem.

You can only highlight "real" text, and the text you see is not real, it's just a scanned image.
You will need to OCR it first if you want to use the commenting tools on it (I'm not sure version 6 has OCR capabilities, though).

Yes there is a OCR feature in the Acrobat 6.0.6. It is located under Document / Page Capture. You click on the 'Find OCR suspects' the window closes. Then reopen the Page Capture and Click 'Start Capture'. After this process the highlight tool worked.

Thanks for the help.
