Problems with drawing lines and measuring areas

When I try to measure or draw lines the screen area will turn black. For example, if I draw a line at a 45 degree line, the rectangle formed by the line corners will be black so I can not see what I am marking up. It appears to happened on scanned documents.

Do you have a fill color set? Select the area measurement, and then right-click and select the Properties menu. The Appearance tab dialog will tell you if you have a fill color selected.
