Reviewer's Comments Disappearing from Shared Review PDF

What would cause a reviewer's comments to disappear from the shared review. One day, comments are there; the next day, they disappear? This was most likely the first reviewer to add comments.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Standard 9.0, Windows

I have exactly the same problem. I can see the comments for about 2 seconds and then they are gone.

Can you provide more detailed information on your shared review:
Windows OS
Internal Server Type (i.e., SharePoint, Network Folder, Web Server Folder)

When you select the "Send Automatically using Acrobat" option, do you send a link or an attachment ?

Using WindowsXP. Shared PDF resides on a shared network drive. When selecting the "Send Automatically using Acrobat option, I send a link.

What version of Acrobat are you using ?

When you start the initiation, do you place the file to be reviewed at a common location and then initiate a shared review?
If Yes, this is one possible reason for the above behavior. Please keep the file which is to be sent for review on the local machine and just porvide the path to a shared location in the initiation wizard and Acrobat will automatically create the review file for you.

Another scenario could be - (if using acrobat 8)
When the reviewers get the link and open review at their respective machines and add/publish/save comments, they all are actually commenting on the the same review pdf. (the one at the shared location) .
The correct way to do is -
Open once the review pdf from the link, save it your local machine and then add/update/delete/check/publish comments. From next time onwards use this saved file for reviewing, the comments exchange(on check and on publish) would be taken care by Acrobat.

I am having the exact problem. I initiate a review, others comment and publish. Their comments are there for a few days then they dissapear.

Windows OS, Acrobat 9.0, using a network folder and sending a link to the network folder.

It seems to work a majority of the time but once and a while comments are deleted mysteriously.

Reviewer is using Reader 9.0

Using 8 Pro I had a similar problem. We found that when a user attempts to close a shared review file that they should NOT save the document when prompted. If the user clicks yes to save, comments dissapear. If someone needs to retain a copy they should always "save an archive copy".

We always say "no" to saving. We don't want duplicate files around. At the end we use "save as achive" to save an archive file and delete the review.

I was curious to see if a solution was found to this problem. We recently started a network file shared review with a large number of comments (500 or so). Two reviewers while connected received update messages that x number of comments were being deleted (all of theirs) while a small number were being added. We were able to reload the comments from a backup file but it has everyone on edge. Any ideas what could be causing this?

If the way you address this shared location involves the machine name (as part of a URL, or a UNC path or something), I would recommend replacing the name with the ip address and then trying it again. We had this issue with shared review over webDAV, and after swapping from using the machine name to using its ip address we have now been running for about 1 year without losing comments.

We are using a Novell NetWare shared drive. So as far as the local machine is concerned it is just a drive letter (Novell handling the mapping) without a UNC or IP Address. Did you experience any problems working with that kind of configuration?

To revive this old thread...

@acrogemini, your link doesn't work anymore so I can't get more info on whatever you're referring us to.

We put a copy of the review version of the PDF on the WebDAV server if the PDF is too big to e-mail, and people access it from a browser using a link we e-mail. Are you saying this is bad to do?

I haven't had any troubles with this method using a mix of Acrobat Pro 8 and 9 for Mac and Acrobat Reader 9 for Mac and PC, but we also haven't had to do this way of sharing PDFs much either since we usually send via e-mail.
