Rotated Comment Boxes

Hi all,

I've got a stubborn issue that I just can't resolve. I've seen it posted on this forum previously but no solution yet.

I have a source doc with a lot of Text Boxes. I have a secondary document that I want to have many of the same Text Boxes. When I copy and paste from the source doc to the secondary doc, the Text Boxes are rotated and there is no way to rotate them to the orientation I want. Even if there was, there are too many to manually rotate. I've also tried rotating both the source and secondary docs and the pasted Text Box always has the same orientation. Other options in the linked thread have also failed to work or aren't an option - ex. saving source to TIFF will flatten the comments and they can't be copied.

I realize the doc orientation on one of the docs may be different than the other even though they appear the same (landscape). Is there a way to "reset" the orientation? Both docs are landscape from beginning to end.

I'm using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 in a Windows environment. Any advice would be appreciated.

Acrobat Pro 8.1, Windows

GVass,

Unfortunately there is no way to rotate comments or form fields (even though form fields have an option, it rotates the text inside the field, not the field itself).

I've had some success by choosing File > Save As and selecting Format: PostScript (at the bottom of the screen). Then re-distilling the .ps file (I typically use the High Quality Print Setting). This will (sometimes) re-set the orientation to the final size of the original PDF.

After doing this you should be able to paste your text into this newly distilled document without it rotating. If the orientation is off, you can use Document > Rotate pages. The good news is, the text should still paste in properly.

If I export the source to PostScript and re-distill, I'll lose all the Text Boxes as they're flattened into the doc. I can't click copy and past them at that point.

I tried this fix with the secondary doc but the comments were still off so that leads me to believe the issue is with the source doc.

You have to remove the existing comments before re-distilling. (you can export and import them again). In fact, exporting & importing the comments might be a nice fix for the rotation issue. I'll have to test...

Yes, the orientation is set by the originating application when the PDF is created. Although both documents may look identical on screen, they may have different orientations in the document structure. Some of the Preflight tools in Acrobat will show you that structure. The is no 100% reliable way to change that orientation after the PDF is created. There are some tricks you can do in the originating application with the print driver and custom paper sizes to make sure that the orientation is portrait for every file you create, but it is not a simple process.
