I use the Typewriter Tool frequently in Acrobat Pro v8.2.3, but today I opened several PDFs and the Typewriter Tool was completely gone. I opened other PDFs and there it was like normal.

I would sort of understand if the tool was 'greyed out' but to completely dropped from the command bar in some PDFs and not in others makes little sense to me. Any suggestions for reasons why this might be happening with certain PDFs?

The typewriter tool is a type of annotation or comment and as such is only available to PDFs that allow or support commenting.

Commenting can be turned off by setting a security option, and forms created by LiveCycle Designer do not support comments.

Thanks - that makes perfect sense. What's odd though is that this PDF was a simple scan from an MFP and should not have any security settings - but it does. Now I know the problem and how to solve it.
