Unwanted sticky notes

I often highlight documents and always get sticknotes, which, since they simply repeat what is already highlighted, tend to clutter up the document. I've looked through the Commenting preferences a dozen time or more but can't seem to figure out how to shake the unwanted notes. Any suggestions?

Make sure the following preference is not checked:
Edit --> Preferences --> Commenting panel "Automatically open comment pop-ups for comments other than notes"

Thanks for the suggestion. It is/was not checked so it appears to be something I'll have to live with unless I decide to re-install. ty
