Using Highlight tool

I've got a document that on occasion I add some text using the typewriter tool. I want to then highlight the text using the highlight tool. For some reason, I can't seem to find a way to highlight the text that I entered with the typewriter tool. Can someone help with a solution?

If you flatten a page via JavaScript, the typewriter text will be converted to regular page contents, allowing the text to be highlighted. But this would also convert other annotations (links, form fields, other highlights, etc.) to regular page contents as well, which may not be what you want.
