Acrobat 8 doesn't install as a printer under Windows 7

Years ago I bought Acrobat 5.0 for use on my then XP PC. When I converted to Vista I bought the upgrade disc for Acrobat 8. I had to load A5 first and then the upgrade to get this to work in Vista.

Now I have a Windows7 PC. The Upgrade disc again wouldn't load by itself (saying there was no previous version) so I loaded A5 as before. This time I got an Adobe message saying there were some aspects of Acrobat that were not compatible with the system but I let it proceed. Then I loaded the Acrobat 8 upgrade. This said that it must first delete all past versions and so it did, eventually announcing that A8 was installed. However after completing the installation of Acrobat 8 this way I am left without any mention of Acrobat in the list of printers whenever I want to print a PDF.

My question is how can I get Acrobat mentioned as a printer on the system?

Many thanks

Patrick

Ah yes, Acrobat 5 was a great release. In regards to Acrobat 8 and Win 7 -- just so you're aware Acrobat 8 is not officially supported on Win 7. Acrobat 9.2 is the first version to support Win 7. That said, some other members have had success installing Acrobat 8 and doing the following:

Click your Start Button and select Control Panel
•Select Devices and Printers
•Select Add a printer
•Select Add a local printer
•Check Use an existing port and select Documents\*.pdf (Adobe PDF) from the drop down. Click Next
•Click the Have Disk… button
•Click the Browse… button
•Navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat\Xtras\AdobePDF
•Select AdobePDF.inf from the list, then click the OK button
•You will see many Adobe PDF Converters in the list, however count six down from the top and click Next
•Name your printer, in my case I named mine Adobe PDF
•Follow the rest of the prompts

Thanks very much for that - I shall give it a try if the other suggestion I have received (to click on 'check for updates' and get the latest version of Acrobat v8) doesn't work. It seems that a lot of changes have been issued since v8.0 came out and it's said that some might refer to W7. We shall see. I am reluctant to buy an upgrade to v9 at the cost Adobe charge since it cost me a fortune to buy the version that works on Vista and I don't need all the latest bells and whistles..

Thanks so much for replying.

Your success in running Acrobat 8 might also depend on whether you're using the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows 7.

That's a thought... I have the 32 bit version so with luck that might be easier I suppose... Thanks for that.

Just to report back. I tried the suggestion I received separately from this forum - namely to click on 'Check for Updates'. This showed that there was indeed an update available for Acrobat v8.0 (that's the version that I installed as an upgrade from Acrobat 5). The 'new' upgrade is version 8.1.3. I said Yes to this upgrade and Bingo(!) it seems to have done the trick. The upgrade was of a prodigious size - I suspect it's actually a complete reload - but after it had finished I had a PDF printer installed and visible whenever I want to print anything.

Haven't had time to check everything as yet of course but the problem I raised on this forum is apparently resolved. I have though made a separate note of all the suggestions just in case they're needed.

Thanks again to all who helped.

Oh, I forgot to say by way of conclusion in case it helps anyone. Acrobat version 8.1.3 loads and works under Windows 7 (32 bit)

I am moving applications from a laptop from Xp Pro SP3 to laptop with WIndows 7 professional.
While trying to install the Acrobat 8.1 professional on Win 7 laptop, I get the following error messages:
Error 1311.Source file not found. C:\data-all\...\...\Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional\Data1.cab.
Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

I have tried the following suggestions in the user forums and the Acrobat support
online:
A. Even though this link is for Adobe cs2, i tried it:
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405578.php
1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories.
2. Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run As Administrator.
3. In the Command Prompt window, type sfc /SCANNOW and press Enter.
4. When the system scan completes, type msiexec /unreg in the Command Prompt window, and press Enter.
5. Type msiexec /regserver into the Command Prompt window, and press Enter.
6. Proceed with the Creative Suite product installation.

B. Temporarily disable Protected Mode in Internet Explorer, and then "re-nstalled acrobat", although manual says "Usethis solution if you have been using Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 or later for Windows Vista to download Adobe Reader from the Adobe website. When Protected Mode is enabled, downloaded files are redirected to a secure "Virtualized" folder. This folder replicates the folder structure on your computer but keeps the files isolated to protect it from malicious software.
To disable Protected Mode:
1. In Internet Explorer, choose Tools > Internet Options.
2. Click the Security tab.
3. Deselect Enable Protected Mode, and click OK.
4. Close and restart Internet Explorer.

C. Temporarily disable anti-virus software, and then download and install Adobe Reader.
Anti-virus software can interfere with the Adobe Reader installer. For instructions on how to temporarily disable anti-virus software on your system, see the software's documentation or contact its manufacturer.

D. Remove all previous versions of Acrobat or Reader, and then reinstalled. I went and removed the traces of all
installations of Acrobat or Reader (any version).

Thanks for the help.

Hluthra;

I hate to say this - but at some point in our lives we need to bite the bullet, pay the money and purchase the upgrade. This situation is one of those. Acrobat 8 on Windows 7 is a bit of a Persona non grata. Can it be made to work? Yes, but it's not pretty. Adobe did make an update, 8.1, to work with Windows Vista. I do not see a similar update to A8 for Win7.

In reading through the system requirements for 8.2.6, Windows 7 is not listed (see below). The first mention of Windows 7 support is 9.2.0.

# Intel® Pentium® III processor or equivalent
# Microsoft® Windows® 2000 with Service Pack 4; Windows Server® 2003 (32-bit or 64-bit editions) with Service Pack 1; Windows XP Professional, Home, Tablet PC(32-bit or 64-bit editions) with Service Pack 2 or 3; or Windows Vista Home Basic, Home Premium, Ultimate, Business, or Enterprise with Service Pack 1 or 2 (32-bit or 64-bit editions)
# Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or 7
# 512MB of RAM (1GB recommended)
# Professional: 860MB of available hard-disk space; cache for optional installation files (recommended) requires an additional 460MB of available hard-disk space
# Standard: 490MB of available hard-disk space; cache for optional installation files (recommended) requires an additional 280MB of hard-disk space
# 1024x768 screen resolution
# Internet or phone connection required for product activation

Wish I had better news.

I am stumped. I would truly appreciate anyone shedding some light in the many dark corners of my mind.
I was trying to update Nero 7 on my Windows 7, 64 bit system.
At the same time my pc told me to update adobe flash player.
I started that update but got a message that said that Chrome does its own updating of Flash so I dont have to. So, i Canceled the update.
I got a message about not being able to do an update on a 64 bit system. I thought,.... this may be irrelevant as i canceled it anyway.
Then the darn error pops up everytime i open Excel. I have to cancel its attempt to find the file to get excel open.
My Nero seems to have updated as it now works.
I was working in AVS video editor at the time but cannot explain what happened next.

I got the Error 1311.source file not found. It is looking for the Data1.cab file.
I searched for it and found it in settings in my MOVIE PROJECTS FOLDER along with my entire Adobe Suite of Software!
There was an Adobe folder with an acrobat update file in my program files where i figured everything else should have been.
So, i moved all the files over to the Adobe folder in my Program (x86) folder.

So, I thought now they would all be together and find each other. I clikcked on the acrobat folder and an update began to run.
I got the 1311 message again. Maybe i have the setup folder that contains the Data1 file in the wrong place, but it is in the Adobe Folder.
i pointed the installer to it, but it didn't like it. I wonder if i should have put all the Adobe files in the 32 bit program folder. BUt I dont think that is where they were

before the ran away to the Movie Projects Folder.

I read the Adobe Support suggestion that Hluthra talked about; running athe SCANNOW as administrator, but that didnt resolve anything. Of course i didn't try to

install Creative Suite afterward as that wasnt what i was doing when i got the error. I tried running the acrobat 8.2.6 update again, but the 1311 was still there.

Meanwhile I read about the Flashplayer for 64 bit machines and downloaded it. BUT it wont run as the 1311 pops up again.

My Adobe software came with my machine, a present from my brohter, so i don't have install discs, if that is what i need. THe brilliant help desk at Supportrix

suggested i do a system restore or reformat! No thanks.

kthanna said something about buying new software, which i don't mind doing, but i dont think i am using anything that you buy. i use adobe reader and flash. I am not even sure what adobe acrobat is or why i have the update file..

Is this too, convoluted? Can someone tell me what to do to get rid of 1311? I would think I could just move the setup folder to a location that installer will accept it and recognize that it exists.

Thanks TaniRae

The name of this site is Acrobat Users Community, most posters here might not know the ins and outs of Adobe Flash player, even though Adobe Flash is used in the Acrobat Portfolios.

You might want to look for an Adobe Flash forum...Adobe product operating system compatibility

Thank you for your reply. I was wondering why no one had helped. I mentioned flash only as i thought maybe acrobat had the same issue of not installing on 64 bit machines. I'm sure my problem is with acrobat as every time i open a word or excel file The PC tries to configure adobe acrobat and then gives me an error message that says Error 1311.source file not found c?/program files x86\adobe\setup files\data1.cab. If i hit cancel i can open my doc, but clearly something is wrong. I found the Data1 file but it is in a winzip file. I tried to extract the files but it wouldn't let me. Perhaps someone could check their program files and tell me if their data1 file under acrobat/setupfiles is also zipped. maybe it should not be?
