Hello!
I got a new computer and wanted to install my acrobat8 on it. Thisd was no problem on my old computer. On the new one installation runs ok, but when openeing acrobat, the window freezes. If I open a document with it, the first page is shown, but after some time the window becomes white and freezes, too.

What can I do ? Repeated installation and repair did not solve the problem.

Mayn thanks for your help in advance.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.0, Windows

Hello.

First, sorry my poor english, still keep trying ...

Same problem here.
I did a new Vista business installation (4 times !!) and after a new installation of acrobat 8 pro.
every time no chance. acrobat freezes after some seconds.
I download a patch (no longer avaibelfrom adobe (?!?) but found the zip file with google.
but, sorry, no chance.
after 5 days i really got angry ...
then, i openen IE7 for browsing some web-sites. just for fun, i clicked on the acrobat toolbar (awaitning the next freez session ...) BUT THIS ACTION OPEND THE ACTIVATION MODULE. after doing the regular activation, acrobat is working fine as expected.

looks like the clean installtion could not start the activation module correctly.

shame on adobe, there was a forum discussion with more than 300 entries over one year and they didn't solve the problem!

just my 2 cent

Is this a Dell computer? Did you de-activie your old installation and re-activie your new installation?

No, its not a dell computer. I did not deactivate my old installation, and now is too late because the computer is disassembled. On the other hand, it is a concurrant license, so there should be no problem installing it on a new computer, I think.

So this is a volume license not retail, correct? Do you have any other Adobe products installed -- like CS3?

Yes, we are under a license plan of adobe

Yes: adobe illustrator CS (exactly this version) and adobe photoshop elements 2.0

I also found out that on another computer the installation works nicely.

If the installation works on another computer (and you've using the exact same installation method), you might try creating a new Windows user account to see if your preferences have become corrupt.

I have done this before, but no difference! Still the same problem.

You've installed with your volume license key, correct? Are you using the Adobe License Manager? Is this an install from CD media or packaged installation?

I installed using the license key given from our distributor. It worked, as I said, on the other computer. I installed from the CD and later tried to copy the directory from the CD to the HD, and started from there, but always the same problem. Furthermore I now have difficulties to remove old installation attempts because during the deletion process the installer alos freezes after some time.

Here is a technical note for manually removing Acrobat 8 Pro. from your system that might help:
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=kb400658&sliceId=2What is the part number listed on your CD media?

There is a german Artikel-Nr., amaybe from our provider asknet: 220289

There is also a number under the bar code 9999999161087

Are these the correct numbers?

I'm not as familiar with some of the international part numbers. Here is a table with some further details:
http://www.adobe.com/elicensing/licensemanagement/alm/alm_tables/cd.php

Just wanted to make sure you weren't using an older media version that still had ALM activated (I wanted to take this component out of your installation issue).

I could not find the number in the list, not on the CD, which I think is burned by the distributor because it contains a label: Adobe Authorized license center., or on the bill from them.

The files on the CD are all from october, 23 rd, 2006, so relatively old.

I also tried to download some upgrades for 8.1, 8.11, and 8.12, but for days the Adobe website was unavailable for downloads.

Can you perform an ESD download from the licensing website? The licensing website has updated versions Acrobat w/o ALM.

I tried to download the trial version, but the same problem. I give up.

I must say I#am totally disappointed because of this problem. I am working with Adobe professionally and I cannot spend hours and hours of solving installation problems. This is the only software I had problems with during the move to a new computer system. I also fear that upgrading other adobe products will drive me into similar situations. Also the help I got from the german service hotline was totally disappointing, telling me that they could not give me an answer because they had the wrong email address from registration. But I have the bill of the product and everything. I will turn to a product form another company or shareware software, with the same functionality.

I thank you for your help, which I really appreciate, but I cannot spend more hours on this problem. Also this automatic upgrading is really annoying.

Best regards

I understand if you don't want to perform anymore troubleshooting but I thought of a simple thing you can try and that is to start Acrobat while holding down the shift key (this starts Acrobat without plug-ins loading). Does this eliminate the freezing?

I am having this same problem. It is also a volume license that has worked fine on another computer, but not on this new one. It's running on an AMD Phenom quad-core processor. Basically, when the initial screen comes up that says: "Getting Started with Acrobat 8 Professional", I cannot get this screen to go away. I click on the box "Do not show at startup" and try to close it and it says "Not Responding" in the title bar and acrobat eventually crashes. Any further help is greatly appreciated. I tried holding down the shift key and it does not eliminate the freezing.

No, unfortunately this makes no difference. Still after some seconds of ok working Adobe crashes.

I am having a similar issue. I'm trying to install the trial version of Adobe Acrobat 8 on a new installation of Windows XP. The installer runs to 78.2% then hangs. I have 1 GB RAM and plenty of diskspace. I am using the admin login. I've closed all running programs. I've had no issues installing any other program and have had no other issues with this fresh installation of Windows XP. At this point I'm using Foxit Pro so I can quickly print and read PDF files, but I need Adobe Acrobat to work with some document automation software (HotDocs Pro) I use. This is very frustrating and I am working through the steps on http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=328002 but most shouldn't apply as this is fresh install of XP with all updates. All other software installed and is running fine.

Have you tried deleting the temporary files that Acrobat or Reader creates (from previous versions), and then installing the update or upgrade? Acrobat and Reader check temporary files at startup, sometimes an excess of temporary files can cause a long delay during startup or appear to be a freeze.

To delete temporary files:

1. Choose Start > Run, and type command in the Open text box. Click OK.
2. Type the following commands and press Enter after each command:
c:
cd\
del acr*.tmp /s

Note: Many lines of text will fill the Command.com window as this process runs. Wait for the process to complete (when the text has stopped for about 10 seconds), and then continue to the next step.

3. Type exit to close the Command.com window.

Important: Before you upgrade to version 8, remove versions 6.x and 7.x of Acrobat or Reader from your system.

I am having the exact same problem.
I'm almost 100% sure it's the FNPLicensingService that launches shortly after running Acrobat.
I tried denying everyone access the folder where FNPLicensingService.exe resides (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Macrovision Shared\FLEXnet Publisher) and Acrobat runs fine for about 10 seconds until you get an error telling you that it needs reinstalled but it does NOT crash.
I'm tearing my hair out over this one.

Try running the Repair Acrobat Installation command (from under the Help menu) right after Acrobat launches to see if it corrects the problem.

Same problem here, too - new XP machine, acrobat appears to install correctly, then freezes upon opening. Uninstall does not work, it returns error 1705. I've cleaned the registry several times, used the windows installer cleanup utility, disabled all protection software. My profile is not corrupt. Adobe Reader works normally, as do all other softwares. Acrobat is the lone error on the pc, which exceeds the minimum requirements to run the software.

Results:
Install: fail, as noted above
Uninstall: fail, as noted above
Automated registry cleanup: no effect
Manual registry cleanup: no effect
Installer cleanup: no effect
Install in safe mode: no effect
Uninstall with new user: works once, but then...
Acrobat 8's ghost still resides on my pc, even after repeating all of the above steps to remove it. Acrobat 8 itself, however, is nowhere to be found (or used)

A call to Adobe "support" revealed that I'd have to pay $40/hr to get help. Considering the nature of this problem, that looks like a far too expensive option - and without much reason to expect a successful result. (On that note, Adobe "support" has always been the one place that actually makes Microsoft "support" look useful by comparison. Bottom of the barrel.)

Very frustrating, it makes me want to find an alternative software provider. At least now I have a shiny silver coaster for my mug.

Does your install fail or just freeze upon launch? If it freezes upon launch, have you tried to immediately run the Repair Acrobat Installation (very quickly)?
Also, have you tried to apply all the updates prior to launching?

The first time, it was on the Welcome popup. I tried to click on the window, and it froze. I did not try to run the Repair immediately, I tried that after ending the process or rebooting. After the first successful removal of the software and installation processes, and reinstalling, it froze when I clicked the EULA Accept button. On a third cycle, I unchecked the box to run the software upon completing the installation. Instead, I tried right clicking Open with... on a pdf document. That time the Windows error reporting box popped up directly after the white Adobe startup graphic blipped on. Different instances, but in all cases upon launch.

Is your suggestion to try running the repair installation either before clicking anything (e.g. while the EULA window waits for my choice), or right away while it's frozen?

I would try doing it as soon as your cursor lets you. Alternatively you could manually download the updates and install to see if it corrects the problem.

Can the updates be installed without the software being on the pc?

As for trying the repair, it will have to wait for a day or two, as I have to get some other work done before week's end.

The updates need to be installed sequentially on the computer with the software installed. You can manually download them at:

I really want Adobe and/or Macrovision to provide a fix for this problem.

The problem has now gotten from bad, to worse. Now Photoshop and Dreamweaver CS3 complain about the licensing servers, then quit. At lease Photoshop was kind enough to save my file before quitting.

After these messages, Dreamweaver is invisible once untill I logged-off, than back on again. Photoshop just freezes shortly after starting, just like Acrobat. The log-off/log-in produce diddn't affect that.

This is a SERIOUS ISSUE, EVEN PREVENTING DREAMWEAVER AND PHOTOSHOP FROM RUNNING. Maybe CS4 was a better deal, after all.

ADOBE AND/OR MACROVISION, PROVIDE A PATCH FOR THIS RUCKUS IMMEDIATELY.

Hi,

I have not the exact same question, and not the trouble, but I hope you can help me anyway. I have given up my old laptop and it was wiped. I did not deactivate my license for acrobat 8 pro. Now I want to activate it on my new computer and of course it won't let me. What can I do? The program tells me that I already have activated the maximum number of licenses.

Thanks for a quick reply. I am a little desperate.

I tried everything fresh install, repair, uninstall and reinstall, updates in order ect. Tried retarded tech support who made me do everything I already did over again and then said it was going to be an additional charge to fix. Finally I figured it out. There is a bug in Adobes licensing software follow the details below and it should fix it. It fixed it for me right off the bat. I was having what seems like the same problem as everyone else. Would freez right after launching the program. This also solves problems where it would close right after starting as well

Download and install the Acrobat 8 licensing service update. Go to www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=3750 for the download link and installation instructions

The below is so search engines will hopefully find this and others will be saved as well
Adobe Acrobat 8 closes
Adobe Acrobat 8 freezes after launching
Adobe Acrobat 8 locks up
Adobe Acrobat 8 Wont run
Adobe Acrobat Sucks
Adobe Acrobat Sux

I fought with a BRAND NEW computer(XP SP3) and 8 Standard for many installs/removals/reinstalls, and MUCH aggravation....had to use a free Adobe READER even though I paid good $ to have the right to comment etc......
The above worked IMMEDIATELY, and saved me MORE aggravation, as I HAVE to be able to markup drawings and such in the coming week.
The File says "Vista" and I have XP,but it worked PERFECTLY.
I sure wish I saw thisc 4 months ago when I first got this machine, I fought it for 2 days straight, and 1/2 of today.

Thanks for the info, I too will bump the info above for search engines to save slobs like me alot of hassle.

Joe, Greg;

Cum'on... Acrobat Sux, Acrobat Sucks? Yea, I have my frustrating days with the red, pointy eared beast with a coiled tail that shoots flames and lives in the 42nd level of... well, you know where... as well.

We've also recently run into authentication problems with our deployments of A8. I don't know if it's 8.2.5 and something MS did or what.

A buddy of mine found solution #2 in this link resolved the issue with a rather irascible machine.

http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/401/kb401043.php

I hope this helps as well.

Thanks guys.
