Adobe add-ins with updates

Much to my dismay I found that a trial version of Adobe Photoshop had been installed with a recent update to Adobe acrobat Reader 8. Not only was unwanted software installed without my permission, but it was also in MSCONFIG eating up memory.

I object to the use of the "crapware" strategy foisting software on users without permission. I would note that Sun Microsystems also pursues this sneaky tactice installing the Google Toolbar and Desktop products the same way.

Major vendors must understand how much end users resent having their desktops turned into marketing platforms for trial versions and unwanted software.

This is basically spam and must stop.

Many of these "sneaky" vendors have an option you need to uncheck to stop the install of the trial programs. For Reader, I think this option was presented before the download. The vendor depends on "users" not reading, just clicking.

In some cases the options screen flashes by and escapes notice. So while the choice is there, it isn't always implemented consistently by the install program. That said the November issue of PC World Magazine has an excellent article on "crapware" and also methods to remove it. Software vendors take note, there is a backlash from consumers over aggressive marketing techniques. If you want evidence, just ask the Federal Trade Commission which has over 50 million names on the "do not call list." What we need for software is "do not install unwanted crap my PC" opt out lists. Think that's harsh. Try the non-family friendly version. Just do a google search on "crapware."
