You can't "permanently" hide the navigation pane. You can set the initial view of a PDF created in Acrobat to not show menus and toolbars (or have it open in full screen mode with no controls) but the user can simply add it back via the View menu in Reader.
How can we set the initial view to “stick”. That’s the problem. It’s not sticking. We know the user can change it, but we need to know why we can’t make the option stick. It’s not a matter of making it permanent.
OK- I assumed "permanent" meant permanent in your first message, one of the problems with this form of communication is no one can really "read between lines." You also do not say what version of Acrobat you have, you only mention Reader.
If you only have Adobe Reader you cannot change the intial view parameters of the PDF, nor can you save the view settings with Adobe Reader so others will see the same view, if that is what you mean by "stick."
If you have Acrobat Professional (and I also think this works in Standard too but have not verifed this), open the PDF in Acrobat, go to File ->Document Properties and in the Initial View tab under User Interface Options check the box Hide Window Controls. Save the file and now in Reader the navigation pane will not show when the file is opened. To get it to show the Reader user will have to change the Reader settings themselves.Hope that helps,
