"Adobe Reader needs to close" error when the program isn't even open !

I just upgraded to Reader 10.1 from 9.x and I have periodically been experiencing a wierd error message: "Adobe Reader has encountered a problem and needs to close...." in the typical Windows error-reporting box. The details are:
AppName: acrord32.exe AppVer: 10.1.0.534 ModName: acrord32.dll
ModVer: 10.1.0.534 Offset: 0020c701

The strange aspect of this is that I don't have the program open when the error box pops up. (Perhaps the updater is running in the background ?)

Mark,

It very well could just be a mischievous bug in Reader 10.1. I've run into similar behavior with Acrobat X from time to time and, unfortunately, need to rely on A9 for most of my work because of this.

Most of the times I've seen this behavior are when I'm clicking on a link to a PDF based URL from either inside a browser or in Outlook (more often than not with Outlook).

I would do two things, see if you can identify a specific set of circumstances and/or actions that cause the error. If you can narrow it down, submit a bug report on Adobe's web site. https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform. Secondly, keep it well patched - you never know when it may be fixed, but if they don't know the circumstances upon which to reproduce it, unfortunately, it may never be.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Unfortunately (for solving the problem) and fortunately (for me), this behavior hasn't recurred lately. It did seem to happen soon after bootup or login to the network, which is why I thought it might be Adobe Updater causing the error. I log in rarely because I simply lock the screen with Ctrl-Alt-Del when I leave my desk, and I only reboot when Windows updates require it, so the issue may still exist.

I was thinking of reverting to version 9, as you did, because the security features in Reader X don't let me open files on the company network. In the meantime, I disabled the security feature and am hoping for a response to my post about that issue.

Thanks again for the excellent suggestion. It won't be practical for me to try it, however, as I've been forced to go back to version 9 because of the other, much more serious problem mentioned in my post. I am assuming that version 9 with full security enabled is safer than version 10 with the security feature turned off.

I've just upgraded to Adobe Reader X 10.1.1 and have just the same problem. Specifically whenever Reader closes, I get the message @labsales quotes. Looks like a bug. And then i got a dialog telling me to upgrade - to the version I am already using!
