Cannot download Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.1 update.

I had to reinstall Acrobat Professional after it stopped creating bookmarks and links. Now I want to do the updates, starting with 8.1, since the automatic updater does not work.

Download consistently fails - from Adobe, any other download site, this community's announcement post, using Firefox or Explorer. Mostly this just hangs and I get an empty web page. From Adobe, I get "invalid server" message.

I am using Windows XP SP2 with Office 2003 and primarily want to fix the Adobe Updater, which constantly runs but does nothing and cannot be closed. Adobe says to turn it off using the Update Manager item under Help, but there is no such item. I have only Check for Updates. None of the other fixes I have tried so far seem to "stick".

Adobe says you must install updates sequentially, but if I cannot download the first one that's pretty much it. Any ideas? All Windows and Symantec stuff downloads without problems.

Thanks in advance.

You can turn of the Updater under Help --> Check for Updates --> Preferences button; however you do need to be connect to the internet to turn it off.Have you tried to manually download the updates at:

I guess I didn't explain it well - quote from previous mail:

"Download consistently fails - from Adobe, any other download site, this community's announcement post, using Firefox or Explorer. Mostly this just hangs and I get an empty web page. From Adobe, I get "invalid server" message."

To be more explicit - if I attempt to download the Adobe 8.1 update from any source, it fails. I am able to download updates for other applications, so this is not a firewall issue.

This has nothing to do with the automatic update. And by the way, I do not have an "Updates--Preferences" button or menu item under Help or any other Preferences window. Lots of articles refer to this but it does not exist in my install of Acrobat Professional 8.0.
