I use Adobe Acrobat 8 and Adobe reader 8.1 but one of them is about to drive me to uninstall both. I constantly find that my CPU is consumed 99-100% of its capability running acrobatupdater. I can't open either of the two programs to check them out but I did repair both through the add/remove feature in the control panel. Using win patrol I disabled both programs but the adobeupdater continued as if notheing can bother it. I also looked at the processes running via the task manager and even there when I try to delete the adobe updater it staunchly goes on it's merry way. Is there a solution or do I just throw these two programs away.
PS Speed is of the essence.

Thanks

There is an issue with the Adobe Updater in that if it cannot establish an internet connection, then it can consume a lot of system resources. Here is a URL with tips to correct the problem:

I figured out how to get to \Program files\Common Files\Adpbe\Updater 5.When I opened that file I got the following listing
ADOBEAUM_root Cert
Adobe Update
Adobe Updater
Adobe updater
AdobeUpdater.da_DK

AdobeUpdater Install Mgr

Right or left clicking on all these items does note open updater so I cab change the preferences

What do I do from here???

If your computer is connected to the internet, then you can change the Adobe Updater preferences to not check for updates. To Change the Adobe Updater preferences, do the following:

Start the AdobeUpdater.exe application from ...\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Updater 5.
When the update screen appears, click the Preferences button.
Uncheck the Automatically Check for updates checkbox and click OK.

I have tried several times to do as you suggest. When I get to Updater 5 and open it I just get a series of read only files and cannot find any way to get the updater screen to appear. ?????

Did you install Acrobat with your current login? Did you or someone else with Administrator rights? Otherwise you should see several files in this directory.

I installed as administrator. I am a single user. I am convinced that Adobe has created a huge problem because they did not provide for access to updater 5 preferences. I am astounded at the many and vehement remarks on their blog where this problem is discussed. But I do believe I've fixed the problem of a constantly running updater 5. Following your instructions I went to Adobe on the C drive and deleted Updater 5. I then successively opened Adobe Reader 8 and Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro and then checked to see what processes were running--Halleluha!!!! No updater 5 appeared. I'll manually update from the Acrobat download web site when I so desire.
I am really surprised at this from Adobe-I thought they were better than this.

Thanks for your attempts to help me.

I finally got an Adobe tech on the phone who recognized what I've been complaining about. He claims the problem is due to system settings on a PC which block the installation of the updater 5 program. He then, when I explained my fix, agreed that that was a solution. I will now update manually when I am so inclined and not suffer the problem of updater 5 eating my CPU alive.
