How can I tell if I have Acrobat Professional installed versus Standard by looking at the Executable? I'm scanning PC's with all versions, but can't tell just by looking at acrobat.exe. Similarly, is AcroRd32 the only executable for Reader?

Acrobat Pro 7.0.9, Windows

To check your installation:

On the menu bar, click Help, click About Adobe Acrobat and it will display the version number and license.

Regarding Reader - you are correct.

Regarding Acrobat - There you can try quering the version information contained in the Acrobat.EXE. For example, in Acrobat.exe on my wife's computer (where I am writing this), Acrobat Version has a value of 7.0.8.2006051600. Right click on Acrobat.exe, select properties, goto the Version tab then look at the various entries. How to handle this programatically is an exercise left to the reader.

A second method is to look for Designer (FormDesigner.exe) - that will show Pro or 3D. 3D then has the added 3D app to separate that from Pro.

A final method is to compare the contents of the Plug-ins folder between Standard and Pro. The primary way Adobe differentiates the products is by use of plug-ins. Preflight, for example, is just a plug-in. However, don't think you can convert Standard to Pro by just copying the plugin's over. Tried it as an experiment - won't work. I would guess that they are digitally signed against the activation/serial number used.

Also, the first four digits of the registration key/serial number varry by product. However, the serial number is stored in an encoded format, for obvious reasons.

Last word of warning - all of these methods may have conditions that can vary signifigantly by version. Test test test.
