Reader 8.x: how to stop updater?

Is there any way to stop (Adobe) updater from running? In the thread at

http://www.acrobatusers.com/forums/ask_an_expert/questions/view/2824/

it said to use "Acrobat Customization Wizard". I installed that, but I don't see anything there about updater.

Just a question, but why is it so hard? From what I read, even editing the registry is not sufficient to block this thing. It doesn't show up in the app I normally use to manage startup functions. It's not critical to know why this is, but it does seem unnecessary.

Thanks,
George

Is this occuring after you've turned off the "Automatically check for updates" in the Adobe Updater Preferences? If so, what version of Acrobat and OS are you using?

Yeah, well, but ... I don't know. I actually take notes, but they seldom help. This is what happened:
- Blue screen of death (cause unknown)
- Reboot
- Firewall (Zone Alarm free) seemed to have lost its config - all net apps had to be re-approved before they could get online.
- After that, ZA was giving a warning that someone was trying to access "192.168.0.1 (DNS)". (My router.) Per my notes, ZA's info led me to conclude that the offender was Adobe Updater.

So, I started A/R (8.0), and did an update to 8.1.1. In the course of doing that, I did uncheck "automatically check for updates". And rebooted, ... I think. Not in my notes, though; so, maybe not.

Anyway, the ZA warning continued. That's when I posted (11/20). But, when I booted up yesterday, and again today, no more warnings.

So, I'm willing to call it pilot error, or confusion, or whatever. There's enough of that stuff around here.

Thanks,
George

Hi,

Although you have not written which version you are using of Acrobat reader, I would like to suggest a solution for the problem in version 8.0.
This is what I found in the Acrobat help

Change updating preferences
1. Choose Help > Check For Updates.
2. In the Adobe Updater dialog box, click Preferences.
3. Select Automatically Check For Adobe Updates, and specify whether you want automatic checking on a weekly or monthly basis and whether or not you want to be asked before updates are downloaded.
4. Make sure that the application you are running (Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat) is selected as the software that will be updated.
5. If appropriate, click Browse to navigate to the location in which you want the downloads to be placed.

Remember that after clicking 'Check for...' you let it show you the 'Preferences' button/link.

And on pressing it you will be shown a screen with a check box

Uncheck the check box and you would have stopped the auto-updates.
