How do I allow customized text in a calculation field?

I am adding a series of numbers and the totaling the average. The scale is 1-5 and also a ? for "Don't Know" or N/A for "Not Applicable." In my average field, if ? or N/A is selected, it gives the value of "0" in the average. I need a way for the user to enter their own average or tell change the calculation to not include a ? or N/A in the average. I am sure a simple script would do it, but I have never written any scripts. Please help!

Is this an AcroForm or LiveCycle Form. This makes a big difference. You can overide the appearance of an AcroForm, For a LiveCycle for a different technique has to be used.

Either way, if the field is numeric, or formatted for numbers only, then you can't put text in it.

If you haven't done any programming before then you need training or professional help. Both are outside the scope of this forum.
