Automatic incrementing number upon opening of a document.

I'm using Acrobat 8 professional to create an invoice form. There needs to be an invoice number that changes (i.e increases by 1) every time that document is opened, so that the invoice number can be looked up on the computer if necessary and opened without the number increasing. This probably doesn't make a lot of sense, but if you can, please help

There are a couple of methods in Acrobat using "global" "suscribed" variables or access a database. The choice of methods depends upon a number things, but no matter which technique is choosen, you have to allow for the necessary connections between servers and desktop computers.

Thanks for the reply gkaiseril, I have just been trying javascript global object as detailed in the acumen journal http://www.acumentraining.com/AcumenJournal.php under august 2004. I downloaded the PDF resources and yes it works but when I try and create it for myself it doesn't work, the box just remains blank. Is there something different I have to do because the tutorial is old from 2004?
help would be apreciated, Thanks.

Hi,
Same problem here. It's a great 'resolution' tho.
I'm have a form in LiveCycle where I'd also like to implement this serial numbering system. Although the example is only for Acrobat, I could, by printing it to Adobe, then running a field detect get the format where, in theory this could be implemented.

What I'd also need to be able to do is to enable users to open a form, edit it, and re-save with updated info. Sort of like a help desk scenario. I've got a 'distribute' version working which at least gives me unique forms. But still got the sequential numbering (and of could the 'edit') system to figure..........

Open to all suggestions, thanks Al
