Can't run form field recognition

I'm using Acrobat Pro 8.1. I've got a pdf document for a Dr. that he wants converted to fillable. There is absolutely no security in the document. When I open the document and try to run form field recognition, it's not availalbe. When I click Forms on the toolbar, form field recognition is greyed out. I only have "create new form" available. I thought you could run form field recognition on an existing pdf document. What am I missing? I just upgraded to Pro 8 a few days ago and am still trying to learn. So please help me out.
thanks,
MIke

The document must have document structure tags within the document. These tags could a have been added at creation or can be added after the fact. One can still use either the Forms Tool in Acrobat or LiveCycle Designer to add fileds to the form.

Hi wislndixie,

Was the form created in LiveCycle Designer? If yes, then you can't run FormField Recognition in Acrobat- it is for AcroForms only.

Hope that helps,

No, the form wasn't created in Designer. It is a standard medical info form that was scanned and then converted to a pdf file.

Hi wislndixie,

OK, a scan starts off as just an image (no recognizable text) until OCR (Optical Character Recognition) is run on it. I remember Lori Defurio from Adobe (in her e-semainar on creating AcroForms) saying Form Field Recognition does perform some kind of OCR as it runs, but she also said it does not work as well on scanned documents( it works best on documents that began life as an electronic doc).

So I would try running OCR Text Recognition on the PDF, saving it, then open and see if the FormField Recognition is not greyed out works.

Hope that helps,
