File size increasing 10 fold Acrobat 6 Pro PDF's

File size is increasing at a remarkable rate, I have been using this for the last 9 years and apart from last year when the file size started increasing from about 2MB up to 36MB my backups went into melt down I haven't had too many issues. I overcame this last year by extracting the pages and resaving them this then brought the file back down to about 2MB. Each file has Text Boxes, Combo Boxes, Check boxes, there is some Javascript in a receipt adding up costs.

I have created Forms from Word, Excel, Powerpoint and turned them in to fillable forms, extra forms can be added if needed and probably at the most one file may have 8 fillable forms on it.

The same thing is now happening again my file starts out at 1.14MB I add one page to it that is only 78KB and the whole file ends up being 6.2MB this does not make sense.

I have tried numerous ways of saving and adding pages, now the band aid of last year wont' work. I have had to go back to old files and take all the information out of them and save them but I fear this is another band aid that may not last.

I have tried the reduce file size that does not work, I have tried extracting the pages and resaving them, I have tried file save as this makes them bigger, I have tried the PDF Optimizer that did nothing. The Audit space usage has the highest percentage on Structure info but I don't know how to reduce this. Can anyone help me with this increasing problem.

Adobe no longer supports Acrobat 6. Doing a File > Save As re-writes the bytes and may bring your file sizes back down, but it sounds like you have something else going on in your PDFs. Are you using any Kanji fonts or Asian characters? Are you sure your machine is virus and spyware free?

Are you able to upgrade your copy of Acrobat? MANY, many improvements have been made in the last 10 years...

I can't remember how it was called in Acrobat 6, but there is the PDF Optimizer, where you can audit the space usage. This will give you an idea of how much space is used by various kind of elements in the document. Based on that, it may be possible to pinpoint the cause for the file size growth.

From the description, it does sound like a font issue; it is a known issue that when you select different fonts for a text field, the font gets fully embedded, and remains so, even if you no longer use it in any field.

You might show the results of the space usage audit here.

Hope this can help.
