Form Numbering

I'm currently investigating what I can/can't do with Professional. So bear with me!
What I've done is create a "Fault Report Sheet" that we can complete (much like a helpdesk ticket),where each time it's opened automatically provides the next number in the series.
Is there a way to do this??

First of all, is this really what you want to do? If you reopen a closed ticket, do you want the number to increment? Will a number based on a day/time stamp work? What happens if three people open the form around the same time?

Incementing a number is pretty easy. Take a look at:

Actually you raise a very good point. I did create a form where each time I opened the ticket it did increment by one. However if a colleague opened the file too, in order to 'log' a ticket, his numbering started at 'one' too.
I confess I hadn't thought about the problem of re-opening a ticket to update it, and of course you're right - we don't want the # to change.

I've also tried the example in the Java section of the LiveCycle help file where you have 'FIRSt, PREVIOUS, NEXT, LAST, ADD.....' buttons and 4 fields where you add data. Linked this to an access database, but to no avail - the 'buttons' also stay 'down' when I select one - and the Database is not updated.

The idea of the 'Date-Time" stamp sounds good - how would I go about it. and would we end up with the same prob when re-opening a ticket??

I really appreciate the feed-back tho. Many thanks, Al
