Forms created in Acrobat 8 used in Reader 9

I have created feedback forms for a client's website using Acrobat 8 Professional. She has downloaded Reader 9 and now gets the following message:

"This document enabled extended features in Adobe Reader. This document has been changed since it was created and use of extended features is no longer available. Please contact the author for the original version of this document."

Can someone explain to me what is happening? The forms have Usage Rights Enabled in 8 and are uploaded to a server. 'Tis a puzzlement. There must be a way to fix this for those using Reader 9...

Thanks for any help!

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.0, Windows

I'm afraid I don't have any advice. I just tried it with Reader 8.1.3 and it came up with the same error message. Other folks have reported similar behavior, but you usually don't hear of a cause or resolution.

Can you confirm that enabling the file for use with Reader is the last thing you did to it in Acrobat before posting it?

Ah... did them weeks ago, and no cannot confirm it was the very last thing I did. Will go back and do that and post again when it is done.

Thank you,

Okay, re-created the Usage Rights Enabled PDF at http://www.dirksecc.com/PDF%20FILES/Employer%20Satisfaction%20Survey.pdf

I cannot get the error message on my system. Will try a different machine, but would appreciate knowing if you are still receiving the error message.

Thanks!

I did get the same error message with Reader 9.0.0 and 7.1.0 just now. Can't test with 8 at the moment. Note that you will only get the message with Reader, not Acrobat Pro.

If I were in your shoes, as a short-term workaround I would set up the forms to submit just the form data, which does not require the application of usage rights. If the data format you choose is FDF or XFDF, the user will be able to launch the resulting email attachment. The PDF will open and the data in the FDF will populate the form, which can then be printed. If the recipient has more than Reader (Acrobat Standard/Pro), she will be able to save the filled-in form.

You then have to figure out what's going wrong with the Reader-enabling. As a test, you might try doing a file comparison between the original file on your system with a version of the file that you download from the server. Obviously they are supposed to be identical, but if something is happening to the file when it gets uploaded to the server, you'll want to know, or at least rule it out. There are file utilities available for doing byte-by-byte file comparisons. A simple check is to compare file sizes.

If you email the original PDF to your client, does the message still appear?

It could also be an Acrobat bug. What version of Acrobat are you using, exactly (e.g., 8.1.2)?

I have sent my client a copy of the PDF that I am uploading to my server by email. She can open it just fine. I will try a different method of uploading the file. Will let you know the results.

PROBLEM SOLVED!

Okay, so here is the scoop. A die hard GoLive Designer, this is a long time client whose site was designed using CoAuthor. When you publish in GoLive, often the resulting file sizes on the server are different from the web content on your local drive. SO...

I exported the site to Dreamweaver, opened it and used Dreamweaver to upload. They arrived intact, and the client's problem is solved.

Still not happy about the sabotage of GoLive...

Thank you for your help troubleshooting!
