Hello all!

I am looking for responses with reguards to common source document types for forms. I am storing several forms in a library and want to see what are some common practices of source document types for PDF forms. All my forms are currently in the PDF format, but if a user that has no PDF experience were to edit one, they would have difficulties. What would be the best document type for a forms source document? If the source document were to be changed it should easily be able to be converted back to PDF to be used.

Thank you in advance!

Forms in any format are not easily understood by inexperienced users.

If you start with MS Office Word files, then you might consider OpenOffice.org for the creating of forms, since form fields can be added within this application and exported to a PDF with the form fields created in OpenOffice.org Writer.

It might be more helpful to have some PDF form creation books like Ted Padova & Angie Okamoto's PDF Forms Using Acrobat and LiveCycle Designer Bible .

You essentially can use any layout program which produces PDF.

If you also have to print the forms, go for real layout software, such as InDesign.

If you don't care about printing (I mean going to the printing press), you can use office software, such as mentioned before. FWIW, I once had a client who designed the forms in … PowerPoint.

There are a few integrated forms design programs out in the market, such as LiquidOffice by Cardiff, or OneForm Plus or Mecca 2000 by Amgraf. The last one is considered to be a high end forms design tool.

Hope this can help.
