Can I imbed a pcl command or similar so that my two page pdf will print duplex when a duplex unit is available?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8, Unix/Linux

No, but you can set this as a Document Preference in Acrobat 8. Of course it only applies to people using Acrobat/Reader8. Look on the Advanced Tab of the Document Properties dialog
