Why are my fillable forms showing up corrupted when emailed?

Using Acrobat X Pro on Windows XP on my desktop computer.
Created a form with fields. Then: Save As>Reader Extended PDF>Enable Additional Features.
Used Distribute both: Send automatically with Acrobat and Save locally to email. Have sent different forms. All have showed up in my gmail account on my laptop (Adobe Acrobat 7, Windows XP Tablet) and I always get this error message when I open the download: "Adobe Acrobat There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired."
If I send it to my desktop computer and open the email with Outlook, and open the attachment with Acrobat X it works fine. What am I missing? From what I've read, anyone who has Adobe Reader or Acrobat should be able to open the attachment, complete the form and return it. Is that not right? Any help is very much appreciated

It seems that Acrobat 10 creates reader-extended versions which Acrobat 7 can no longer understand. You may consider tht as a "subtle" hint to upgradeā€¦

Hope this can help.

Hi Max, Thanks for the post but I want to be able to send the form to potentially anyone so they can respond. If a potential client has to have anything but the most basic Adobe Reader or Acrobat then the Forms function is not very practical or useable.

I doubt what Max says is true. It sounds to me more like the file got corrupted while sent via email (some email servers do that). Try saving it locally, zipping it up, and then sending it manually in an email.

MS Outlook's Exchange server is known to corrupt PDF files unless it is setup to accept the PDF format. As noted putting the PDF into a zip file will prevent this issue.

Error message when you use Outlook to open an e-mail message that contains a PDF attachment from an external mail system: "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired"

Thank you George and try67. The zip file does work but is cumbersome. This has to be utterly simple to use. While some of my clients are far more tech saavy than I, some are far less and this has to work for almost everyone.

Also, I am not on an Outlook Server, just using Outlook as my email program and receiving my email thru my isp. I've never had a problem sending PDFs before and have done it quite a lot--but have used Acrobat 7 until yesterday. I'm wondering if there is a problem with my install of Acrobat X. Can I, should I re-install?

Again, thanks for the help!

It's unrelated to your version of Acrobat. It's related to the settings of your email client/server (or those of your recipient).

I created a form using Acrobat 9 Pro which I then emailed to several 'testers' (friends) for them to complete and email back to me. I have been able to open only half of them, the rest prompt a message "There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired." I use a Mac with OS X 10.6.6, all my testers probably use PCs. Is there any simple answer to enable me to open their returned forms? I've tried to open them in Preview and even that doesn't work. Any suggestions welcome.
