Hi,

Recently, I created a form using liveycle designer that comes bundled with acrobat pro x. Is this an XFA form or is it some other kind? The form I created calls a web service. Is that an XFA form? Will it have the 500 user EULA limitation and is it a 'rights extended' pdf. will normal acrobat reader users be able to open it (even under the 500 user limit)? are XFA forms different/better and how can I impplement the same in XFA? Im obviously a bit if a newbie. thanks for the assistance

My Product Information:
LiveCycle Designer, Windows

Yes, form created with LiveCycle Designer are XFA forms. In contrast, forms created with Acrobat are known as AcroForms. There are two different types of XFA forms that Designer is able to create, static and dynamic.

Adding usage rights to a PDF is an additional step that can be done with Acrobat to either an XFA or normal PDF. So an XFA form may or may not have usage rights applied with Acrobat. If it does, then the restrictions imposed on the licensee by the license agreement apply. To add usage rights to a PDF, you need either Acrobat (Standard, Pro, or better) or Adobe's LiveCycle Reader Extensions server-based product, which is entirely different than LiveCycle Designer. The license for the latter is different than Acrobat's.

Adobe Reader will be able to open an XFA form, whether or not the licensee has exceeded the 500 limit on the number of documents from which they can use data.

To add usage rights to a document. select: File > Save As > Reader Extended PDFand select from one of the options. For an XFA form, you'd normally select the last one, "Enable Additional Features"

so, when I created this form that calls a web service using livecycle designer, I did not save as an extended pdf. will it still function fine if I try to open it with just acrobat reader?

That depends on exactly how you've set it up to call the web service. If you're using SOAP, for example, the document needs to be extended with LiveCycle Reader Extensions, since Acrobat cannot apply the necessary usage right. It may be easiest to just try it and see what happens, and if you get stuck, post again with more details.
