Dropdown List Error

Hi,
 
I am designing forms in Livecycle that have two dropdown lists in each. The first dropdown list has 6 values which when selected populate the second dropdown list. It is working fine until I open the form in Reader or Acrobat and the first dropdown list has 12 values instead of 6 as the values have duplicated for some reason. I am using the form variables and some script to generate the dropdown values..
 
Has anyone ever had this problem before? Could you point me in the direction of a better way to get the desired outcome?
