editable text fields that expand, but not scroll and other things

I have a form that was created in MS Word. When it is converted to pdf the form fields are editable in Reader but cannot be saved, text fields do not expand, and a new row cannot be added.

I know these things are doable in LC Designer but so far I haven't been able to figure out how to do them. I am not an XML coder nor a software eng.

So I opened LifeCycle Designer, used my existing word form as the template and have a form-type thing to work with.

Sadly, documentation for this product pretty much stinks so I really don't know where to begin.

Any help out there?
Thanks!

Marla

Hi MarlaZ,

Since you are very new to LiveCycle Designer, I suggest a good place to start would be to spend a couple hours watching the On-Demand e-seminars on LiveCycle Designer forms in the Learning Center here at AUC. Don't have the links right now, but there is one by Angie Okamoto, one by Thom Parker, and one by Jim Healy. All have titles with "LiveCycle Designer" and "Forms" in them. The e-seminars are'nt searchable so you'll have to scroll through the list to find them. After watching those you should have a decent grounding in the basics. Then it may be useful to go to the Gallery here and look at some of the sample files and examine how they are put together and the code used.

Ted Padova and Angie Okamoto published a great book titled "PDF Forms Bible" by Wiley publishers and it covers both AcroForms and LiveCycle Designer forms in great detail, including a CD with working samples of files discussed in the book.

Hope this helps,

Dimitri

Hi and thanks.

Unfortunately I don't have time to study up on how LC Designer works. I have a form, I have to make it editable and saveable and that's that.

I have been able to get the text fields in the table cells to expand for text. Also, i was able to "steal" an Add Row and a Delete Row button which worked.

But THEN i added a new table under the one that I got working and now nothing works and the expanded text from the first table covers the second table.

I didn't think this would be such a difficult process. If you can offer some help on how to do this I would appreciate it.

Best...!

Marla

Hi MarlaZ,

LiveCycle Designer is not a simple software application and there is a learning curve that requires some time to master. There is simply no getting around that. You can copy code you find elsewhere, but typically this leads you to the same spot you are in now- some things work and some things don't. To get a dynamic form with tables to work properly the most important thing you need to have is an understanding of is the architecture of LiveCycle PDF forms (how they are put together and how all the pieces relate to each other).

It is unfortunate that you have been given a relatively complex task and no time to learn and/or understand what you are developing- pretty common these days. There are loads of people that make their entire living developing PDF forms- creating good ones is not simple "that is that" task.

If you are in a hurry to get this done you might want to consider posting this to the Job board here- some of those form developers I mentioned watch that board.

Hope this helps,

Dimitri

Hi Dimitri,
Since I am a document contractor having been asked to make this complex form basically out of thin air, I am not in a position to hire out or pay for someone else to do it. I would have done this if it was my own documentation and I really needed to get it done. But it's not my place to have the company pay for it. I am however very determined to learn this program on my own, one way or the other!!

thanks

Marla
