Extra pages inserted automatically

Why does adobe insert extra pages automatically when changing the width and height of the master page?

Is there a way that I can delete the extra pages? Not as if you can see the pages in the hierachy.

Am I missing something?

The hierarchy window does not show pages, it shows the subform hierarchy. Acrobat/LiveCycle automatically determines the number of pages needed to display the content on the pages. It is very sensitive to the geometry of how subforms and other elements are fitted to the master pages. It's not always obvious what's going on, you have to look carefully at the content area and what you are trying to place.
