Mandatory fields - selective display

If I have for example 3 mandatory fields in my form and one isn't completed correctly, all 3 light up (ie. are bordered red). This can be confusing for the user to know which field they've entered incorrectly. Is there a way to ensure that only the relevant field is highlighted?
