Tabulated form appearance

I've set up a form that looks like the old fashioned tabulated style. LiveCycle uses the same sort of look with its 'Design View', 'Master Pages','XML Source','Preview .pdf' tabs along the top of each working area.

I've done a reasonable job of making it look OK, but if I put borders in, it ruins the effect, thus I've hidden the borders. However it would look better if I could display them. I've played with layers, colours, borders, etc., but ultimately could only make it look OK if I either hid the borders or made the borders the same colour as the buttons that simulate the tabs.

Does anyone know if there's a sample I can see where someone has successfully done this?

Hi again...
I've created an example form with 4 tabs.
If you click on the tabs, the forms changes it's color, depending on the selection.
