time calculation

I'm trying to create a timesheet that will calculate between a start and stop times, and convert the difference into hours worked. The calculation works if I use number fields, but anytime I use a time format (like 9:00 to 5:00) the calculation displays zero for a result. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
