I need to nestle a tool tip (represented by a small image) next to a text field in a flowed subform--sort of like a superscript but the problem is that it seems to have to be on a line all by itself. Is there anyway I can work around this?

tooltips do not support images, only text.
You possibly can use an hidden image next the the text field you show/hide over the mouseEnter/mouseExit events of the field.
But, this method will only work properly for positioned layout.
