Hi,

I am a newbee to Adobe Acrobat. I am using Acrobat 8 Professional to edit a PDF file and add links that will open to other pdf file or a web page.

I have Parrent folder ABC and it containts lots of other folders in hierarchical tree structure containing pdf files.

I have word files where I am editing text contents and then converting them to a pdf file using PDF maker software. Then I open these PDF files in Acrobat 8 Pro and add links to certain text vales using Tools  Advance editing  Link tool  then add a link pointing to other PDF file placed in same folder. File is then saved.

Problem I face here is next time when I open this PDF file and click on a text value which is hyperlinked to open another PDF file linked in previous step… it never opens. When I go to link tool again I see that links are getting changed, automatically pointing to random locations in any folder under parent folder ABC. In addition to this, part of link is getting appended to itself from any random point in same link (Hope this is not confusing you)

I deleted link and created it again with “Lock” dialog box checked. But my problem persists. I have very deep hierarchical folder structure under root folder ABC.

I am using Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional version on Windows 2000 professional. I also tried it on win XP and result is same.

Is there anything I am missing out in my procedure? Why my links are getting changed to random path?

Acrobat Experts, Please Help me out…!!! to fix this problem.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.0, Windows

Are you adding all your links in Acrobat or are you using the PDFMaker macro in Word to convert the links automatically?
If you're adding the links in Acrobat, can you describe the"exact" steps you're using?

Hi --

Because the problems you are describing are random, I think the best thing to do is repair your installation. It shouldn't matter where you are adding the links, nor how many levels of folders you use.

Choose Help > Repair Acrobat Installation and let the program do its thing. Then try again. It won't fix any internal problems in your existing files.donna.

Hi lkassuba and Donna,
Thanks a lot for your reply.

I just figured out a possible glitch in my steps. What I was doing is Edit Word File -> Create PDF using PDFMaker Macro -> Edit this newly created PDF and add links to it using link tool -> Save this edited pdf in a separate folder outside root folder --> reconfirm if all links are working properly --> then go to respective child folder within root folder --> delete old copy of same pdf --> paste this newly created pdf from a temp folder besides root folder to final targeted folder. Now in this scenario till edited PDF files were in temp folder besided root folder. All links (of other corresponding pdf files within root folder) were opening properly. As soon as i replacer old PDF files with this "working ok" copy stotred in temp folder, links used to get changed randomely and append itself from any random location within that link, making it useless.

What I did later is I just saved edited PDF directly to desired folders within root directory replacing/overrighting older versions and all links are working fine for now.

Can you please help me understanding why links in edited PDFs stored in temp folder out side root directory got currupt when copied within desired folder under root directory? I thought relative path should have got changed in this copy paste process, but it didn't behave that way.

Thanks,

It may depend on what steps you used to create the links. Did you use the "Go to Page" or "Open a file"?
