Acrobat 9 (CS4) uninstall & Acrobat X (CS5) install problem

Problem:
Cannot completely uninstall CS4 (only the Acrobat 9 Pro module) from Windows XP. My apologies but after running the uninstall, I'm not able to know the exact version (ie. 9.0, 9.1.x, 9.2, etc).

Result:
CS5 (Acrobat X) installation failure. During installation, Adobe installer thinks that Acrobat 9 is still installed and isn't able to complete the Acrobat X installation.

I've run the following to address the problem but nothing works.
1. Windows uninstall (uninstalled CS4 via the control panel)
- CS5 installs all modules except Acrobat X
2. Uninstalled (via Windows uninstall) CS5
- Noticed that CS4's uninstaller is still in the add/remove list and Acrobat 9
is still seen but impossible to remove
3. Adobe CS4 uninstaller (via Adobe download & run)
- CS4 is no longer visible via the control panel but all the Acrobat
files/folders remain on the C-drive and keys/links in the registry remain
4. Microsoft FixIt (via Microsoft download & run)
- Found CS4 references and removed them
5. Regedit (removing Acrobat 9 Pro links and installation keys)

Question:
Is there any other ways to completely remove a CS4 module (specifically Acrobat 9) completely so higher versions of the Adobe Suite can be installed properly?

Thanks in advance - Jaitlyn

It looks like you've tried most everything there is. Try running the CS5 Cleaner Tool. It works for CS5.5, CS5, CS4 & CS3:

If that doesn't resolve it, there are a few other steps in this document that you may also want to try:

Thanks so much Kelly. I ran the CS5 cleaner (selecting CS4 as a target) but the cleaner didn't find an instance to clean. The regedit steps in the cpsid 50651 document were also tried without success.

I uninstalled CS5 (also successfully using the cleaner) and plan to try re-installing CS4 again although I expect it to also fail since Acrobat X failed again. If it does fail, am I correct in assuming that a fresh Windows reinstall might be required?

Thanks, Jaitlyn

Yes, sorry, that may be your last option.

Hi Kelly, No luck so far. The CS5 cleaner and registry edits were completed. The CS5 cleaner and Windows uninstall both don't see CS4 or Acrobat 9 Pro. However, CS5 still sees it somewhere because it grays-out Acrobat X Pro to attempt an upgrade.

Thank you for following up. Right now, I'm hesitating to reinstall the OS due to the amount of other things I have installed. CS4 and CS5 were completely uninstalled and I've been registry searching and deleting Adobe entries and trying to find a line somewhere that would tell the system that Acrobat 9 Pro is installed. Probably dangerous but, worst case, a OS reinstall is called for anyway. If you think of anything, please let me know. I really appreciate this forum and your help Kelly. Thanks, J
