I'm having fits here...

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate, Acrobat 9 Pro Extended and I'm the administrator on the machine. For some reason the "Link" tool is grayed out. I've checked the security settings of the file and the file is unlocked. I've opened up several files and no dice. I checked Preferences/Security, and Security Enhanced, and I don't see any setting there that would change things.

Any idea's?

Regards,
Dan

Any chance these files have been created using the PDF/A setting? Do you see a standards panel when you open the files? To check, try deselecting the following preference Edit > Preferences > Documents > View Documents in PDF/A mode: Never.

I seem to be having the same problem. I changed the settings as suggested. It worked fine for the first 2 hours; I was able to link most of the document. I saved and closed it and returned to it an hour later and my link tool grayed out again. I can open another document and its there just not in the document I need it for. Is there something wrong with Acrobat 9.. Am I missing a patch for this? I even did 'Repair of Acrobat' (under the Help Menu) thinking this could fix it.

Please help, my position consist of linking most days; I need this option available.

Have you checked to see that your preferences are set in such a manner that your Acrobat application preferences for the Documents category are set so as not to be using the PDF/A mode?

Are there any digital signatures in the document that may be changing the document settings once signed?

There are zero digital signatures. These are documents that I am creating, (using the same computer.) That I work on for a number of days until finalizing and sending a copy to the customer. I am the only person working on these documents. Like I said before it will work and the next time I open the document it's grayed out. I have noticed, the link button is usually there when I first create the document, and if I don't finish linking the document at the same time of creation I have to go to another computer with an older version of Adobe to finish linking. Is there another setting that could cause this? I have to be missing something.

What settings are you using to create these files? It may be in the file creation.
I have also seen one user post that the problem is resolved by NOT opening the document with Windows Explorer by double clicking the pdf icon in its folder.
Instead, Launch Acrobat first, then choose File > Open.
Finally, I noticed your Acrobat wasn't up to date, can you run the updater?

Preferences>Security>Advanced Preferences...
(Digital Signatures Advanced Preferences)
Verifation:
When Verifying: Always use the default method (overrides the document-specified method).
Verification Time
Verify Signatures Using: The time at which the signature was created
Use expired timestamps

Creation:
Default Method to Use when Signing and Encrypting Documents: Adobe Default Security
Enable Reviewing of Document Warnings: When Certifying a document
Prevent Signing Until Document Warning Are Reviewed: Never

Guillenjenn,

Wonderful news that File > Open is working for the Link tool.

I'll fill out a bug report for this. I would suggest anyone else having this issue do the same, through this web form:

Nicole,

Have you tried Launching Acrobat first, then choose File > Open? Which means NOT opening the document with Windows Explorer by double clicking the pdf icon through your operating system.

Excellent! What may not be obvious - close the document after the change in settings, saving over the original document and re-open.

I know the workaround is to open the PDF using File>Open, but is there another fix available yet to resolve the Link Tool being greyed out?
