I a newbe, so be gentle.

I just purchased Acrobat 9 Pro and awaiting delivery,

Is Adobe Reader part of the Acrobat package, and should I remove the reader when I
install Acrobat?

My main use for Acrobat will be to convert .pdf scanned files to a type that is recognized by
JAWS for Windows which is a screen reader for the blind.

I I'm in the wrong topic area please let me know where I should be

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 9.2, Windows

you can have Reader and Acrobat on same machine (yes, it's true)

however, you dont need acrobat if your main purpose is to scan, OCR and screen read. the direct (and much less costly) approach is to scan to MS office document imaging (MODI comes bundled with MS office suite).

You can, but it's not recommended and many people have problems because of it.
His purpose, as I understood it, is not to scan to PDF, but to convert scanned PDF files to something else. For that, you probably do need Acrobat.

scanned pdf is simply tif image in a wrapper (called pdf). its the ocr that counts. this he has with MODI. given his stated main purpose, he doesn't need acrobat. if he needs to convert a file to pdf (on a budget), he can use cutePDF or any of the other freebee PDF printer/converters. the JAWS screen reader (http://www.freedomscientific.com/products/fs/jaws-product-page.asp) will work with just about anything.

Wow What quick acurate responses.

try67 is correct I need to convert scanned documents. Like all males, I couldn't wait to try the trial download while waiting for the "official" version. I was able to convert the 1 file I received and saved it as a .doc file that was read by JAWS. I not sure I really understood what I did.

Thanks for your help--- I also found the Accessibility Forum.
