document files are on a network server.

Hi,
Successful completion of convert to PDF, OCR, combine of PDFs and such processes are always problematic when pointing a local machine's install of Acrobat to files out on a network. Too many network performance variables in play to have a high confidence level in successful completion.
All goes well sometimes; others, ... it's spin-crash-burn.

Something to consider/try:
Transfer a copy of the files to the local machine that has Acrobat 7 Pro.
Use a Batch Sequence to convert the *.doc files to PDF.
In Acrobat Preferences, Convert to PDF category - located & select MS Word.
Then click the Edit button. Configure to meet your needs.
For a Batch Sequence - create a new sequence. Use something such as "Open Options" or "Description".
Run this sequence against the *.doc files in a given folder.
The "Run" dialog lets you use a drop-down menu to select file types other than PDF.
Select the entry associated with MS Word (look for MS Office ... lead in on the entry).
Let the local machine crunch for Acrobat - Don't expect to use the box for anything else during this.
The process can be resource intensive.
If you are in Windows, long runs may ultimately leave the box out of resources.
So, do chunks.
Should the box lock, back out, reboot, start anew on the last "chunk".

Once done, combine PDFs.

If you cannot work on the local machine you may want to come in at "OH-Dark Hundred" to give it a try across the network.

Thanks for all of the detailed help! I decided to keep the files on the server and batch process .DOC files to .PDF files there. And then used the Create PDF from Multiple Files feature. That seems to work well!
