Acrobat X Pro 10.1.1 randomly crashing with no discernable pattern.

I have a user who is experiencing random Acrobat X crashes. Some background information... she had some profile corruption on her machine which ended up requiring a complete wipe and re-image of her machine.

Prior to the reload, she was having random Acrobat X crashes. We did the reload from scratch with no issues, installed Acrobat X with no errors and assumed it was good. However, the user called back the next day saying she was still having the same random crashes. I ran a repair installation from Acrobat X, but it didn't seem to have any effect. I haven't been able to find much information about her error, so I'm hoping someone here can shed some light on this.

I have a copy of the generated error from the Windows Event Log, a HijackThis log, and a copy of the Adobe System Information report. The user is running Windows 7 x64, there is no other Adobe software on the machine except AIR and Flash. I have run multiple MemTests and a full disk check to rule out those issues. Anyone have any insight or hopefully a solution?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 10.1, Windows

My Acrobat Reader 10.1.1 crashes too. If you look up in Windows, I found that's the annots.api version 10.1.1.33 fails.

On the face of it the logs don't help - you meet the Acrobat X system specs, your subversions match what's expected and I can't immediately see any conflicting processes. However the WEL crash report in your second post can only be interpreted by engineering, as to match the stack offset to a routine you need to be looking at the source code. Engineering do not read these forums, nor anywhere else as a matter of routine.

You need to raise a support case with Adobe - if the crash turns out to be a bug there is no charge for the ticket.

Thanks for the reply! I wasn't able to find any problems either, so at least I feel pretty good that I'm not missing something. I've recommended to my supervisor that we open up a support ticket with Adobe, so we'll see where that goes.

Victor,

When we get to this position with a person's workstation we tend to just rebuild the box. Yup, format the hard drive, reinstall the OS and move forward from there. The cost of niggling around with the issue is more than the cost of the rebuild. But, it looks like you already did that.

So, what things carried over from the previous build?
Files - some.
Applications - Any nefarious tools from vendors that may be a bit shady?
Profile - Sounds like here is something to really take a peek at. If there is corruption on the existing profile what's to say that those problems weren't migrated to the newly built system.

I'm going out on a limb here with practical expertise, but that's never stopped me from asking the stupid type questions before....
Have you tried an alternate profile? Same problems? Different Problems?
Flush and rebuild the profile? I don't really know how hard this is. It may be problematic as your PKI keyring will now be different.

Good luck - please post back how things are going and/or if you find a solution.

Thanks

Doug

Doug,

I am as certain as I can reasonably be that there are no malicious applications on the PC. As for files, Acrobat will crash independent of the file that the user has open, and as far as files in the PC in general, I have gone through and eliminated practically everything that I could think of in an effort to troubleshoot this issue.

I had the same thoughts as you regarding the profile, so one of my troubleshooting steps was to create a new, distinct, profile with default settings and have the user switch to it and see if that alleviated the issue. Unfortunately, Acrobat was still crashing even with the new profile.

I've opened up a ticket and I'll keep this thread updated as I get information from Adobe.

Thanks so much!

Victor,

As much as we don't like admit the possibly regarding the fallibility of Adobe Systems engineering - they do make mistakes just like the rest of us. I've even met a few of them... and low and behold.. they are human as well :)

The primary thing they are going to want is both reproducibility and repeatability. I do this with that and such and such happens.

Good luck, my friend!

Doug
